After a few years of endless microtrend cycles, this fall’s fashion trends feel more timeless and wearable than ever. The most popular pieces this season can be worn year after year—they’re that good—with suede jackets leading the pack. They’re the buzzy outerwear that editors, fashion people, and celebrities can’t get enough of. Bella Hadid gave the jacket her cowgirl stamp of approval, forever It-girl Alexa Chung included one in her recent collection with Madewell, and luxury brands like Coach and Miu Miu co-signed the jacket on the runways. Best of all, however, is that the suede jacket won’t ever go out of style, so it’s worth the investment, and there’s likely dozens of them for less across secondhand websites and at your local thrift stores.

Ahead, everything you need to know about the trend, where to buy it, and how to style it.

The Trend

Every fall season there’s a have-to-have-it jacket. In years past it’s been edgy moto jackets and corporate-core blazers, but the through line that connects all the different popular styles is that they tend to be classics. This year, up against the popular preppy barn jacket is the classic suede jacket, and its slow rise in popularity makes the trend feel more real. It’s all over fall Pinterest boards, theres a bevy of TikTok videos covering it, and it’s been co-signed by Ralph Lauren, Coach, and Miu Miu.

At Coach’s Fall / Winter 2024 show, models strutted down the runway in oversized brown coats with grungy fringed details. At Miu Miu, long suede blazers were adorned with girly sequined floral decals, and at Ralph Lauren, the designer brought the silhouette into his classic Americana aesthetic with un-fussy coats, blazers, and fringed pieces. Even with each designer twist, the jackets regained their timeless, effortless appeal.

Bella Hadid was early on in the trend—as she often is—sporting a suede coat in an Instagram post back in August and unofficially kicking off the craze. Throughout the fall she’s incorporated iterations of suede bombers and bags (suede accessories are also incredibly popular this season) into her Y2K-meets-cowgirl wardrobe. Alexa Chung also made a case for the fabric in her collection with Madewell with a scrumptious long, dark chocolate suede coat that swiftly sold out.

Celebrity and runway approvals aside, the jacket’s popularity just makes so much sense. Chocolate brown is always popular come fall, but has been especially prevalent this year (just think about how every celeb you love has been wearing brown nails as of late). Quiet luxury has stuck around as a dominating trend, and the supple suede material (sans logo) fits right in. There’s also a big interest in western silhouettes and country staples, and fringed suede jackets slot into that aesthetic nicely. Of course, Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter ushered in a new western wave as well, bringing back suede jackets with cowboy boots and animal print patterns.

However, the true testament to a trend is its popularity on TikTok, and the suede jacket has earned its social media spots. Countless creators have shown off their suede coats, and while many have purchased theirs from H&M and Massimo Dutti, plenty have also sourced theirs from resale platforms like Poshmark and eBay. Creator Kiana Ranica posted a video styling her new suede piece captioning the TikTok “Go vintage for your suede jackets ladies,” showing off her secondhand find.

Undoubtedly the best part about the suede jacket craze is its sustainability factor. Although it’s true that suede is expensive, a well-made coat an last a lifetime. However, for those who prefer vegan items or are on a budget, faux suede coats have been offered across brands at more affordable prices. Regardless of what type of suede your in the market for, the styling opportunities remain the same. You can throw it on with practically any fall outfit and the luxe-looking material always adds a cozy yet polished touch.

Since the trend has some time to settle, once sold-out options are now back-in-stock with more popular brands hopping on the trend. Abercrombie & Fitch has a two-piece suede set including a pretty sand jacket that just eclipses $100. The set would be perfect for a fancy festive gathering this fall paired with knee-high boots and colorful tights.

The Frankie Shop has plenty of suede options including blazers in light brown, navy, and black. The TikTok viral Massimo Dutti offering is back-in-stock and would pair so well with black baggy jeans and kitten heels for a fall night-out. And if you’re on a budget, Anthropologie has an under-$200 trench silhouette and Coach has an oversized option at 60% off. In short, there’s enough suede options for everyones wishlist—shop some of our favorites, below.
