If the word “mother” is still confusing to you in its colloquial form, this might help. To use it in a sentence: Nicole Kidman is mother. And here is why.
On Monday, December 2, the actress attended the star-studded Gotham Awards to celebrate her upcoming movie Babygirl, an erotic thriller set to release on Christmas day. Instead of method dressing in the movie’s signature baby pink shade, she and stylist Jason Bolden chose a hand-painted black Dolce & Gabbana gown from the brand’s Fall/Winter 1998 collection that was much more mommy than baby. So, too, were her nails—which is to say she didn’t go softly with her manicure.
Cut super short and elegantly filed into a squoval shape, Kidman chose a deep brown-red shade to compliment the colorful painted florals on her gown. It’s the kind of color I would’ve been disturbed to see my mom pick at the salon as a child—why go there when sparkly blue is an option?—but now know to be the peek of resourcefulness. It’s simple and chic while still remaining a little bit sexy (mother!!!).
Kidman is a big fan of neutral shades or a dainty French design, so this was a special departure from the norm made even more special by its ability to be recreated. While her regular nail artist, Thuy Nguyen, has been known to custom make her shades—she crafted a similar color for Elizabeth Olsen at the 2023 Oscars—you can find a similar look via Essie’s Wicked, Chanel’s Rouge Noir, or Olive & June’s CN.
Meanwhile, hairstylist Serge Normant took control of Kidman’s dark-rooted vanilla blonde hair, keeping it nice and straight and teasing it tall and wide for the perfect messy look. Gucci Westman was on makeup, with a deep lip (but not as deep as those nails) leading the charge. The artist’s Westman Atelier Lip Suede Hydrating Matte Lipstick in the tawny chestnut shade Rue is a good match.
Now, do you know what the word means?? Regardless, remember: Even when she’s Babygirl, Nicole Kidman is mother. Also, mother always knows best—especially when it comes to your winter manicure.
