I know, I know—it can feel so good to make a big, dramatic hair change. But sometimes, a tiny adjustment can give you that same rush and save you a whole lot of post-salon-clarity heartache.

Bella Hadid is one person who knows the power of small changes. While her big sister, Miss Gigi, has no problem going in for the big chop, Bella usually takes a softer approach to switching things up with her glam. It’s rare she differentiates from her classic brunette color scheme (can you believe she’s a natural blonde?) and tends to keep her hair long and silky, adding a bang every now and then.

Thus, it’s fun to spot a slight differentiation in her routine—no matter how miniscule. And friends, we have one to talk about. On January 22, the supermodel was spotted on a stroll around New York sporting a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it new hair color. Yes, it’s still brown. But it’s a different brown.

While I admit I pay attention to Hadid’s hair more than most, over the last couple of months I’ve noticed a pattern. Every four-ish weeks (perhaps after a standing appointment with Jenna Perry?) her dark locks look a little bit lighter and a little bit warmer.

This time around, her hair was bright enough that—with the inclusion of the winter sun—it gave off a reddish tint. My not-licensed-but-semi-professional take on this phenomenon is that she’s been getting regular hair gloss treatments. Also called glazes, glosses are non-ammonia treatments that don’t lift color, but interact with the hair fiber to add major shine and enhance tone. The results last four to six weeks—see my point?

This time around, the 28-year-old accessorized her sleek locks with a very simple accessory: the same no-slip elastic headband that was popular in middle school gym class. Ever classic, she chose a black shade from whatever multipack she’s been hoarding, further emphasizing the warmth of her hair color.

Bella, Bella! We’ll see you in gym class, where we’ll go over all the hair appointment gossip during stretching time. And bring your cowboy boyfriend, please—it just might be square dancing day.
